Surah Al-Kawthar is one of the shortest chapters in the Quran but holds immense significance for Muslims. Revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Makkah.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Innaa a’taina kal kauthar Fa salli li rabbika wanhar Inna shani-aka huwal abtar

In the Name of Allah,the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

Indeed We have given you abundance.

So pray to your Lord,and sacrifice .

Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.

Why Was Surah Kausar Revealed?

Surah Al-Kawthar was revealed during a period when the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taunted him with the derogatory term “Abtar,” which means “cut off.” This term was used to mock him for not having any surviving male heirs, as both of his sons from his wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) had passed away at a young age.
The period when Surah Al-Kawthar was revealed was when the Muslim community was small in numbers and faced significant challenges and opposition from their enemies in Makkah. The revelation of Surah Al-Kawthar served as a powerful message of reassurance, hope, and divine support for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the early Muslims.
